I find it fulfilling to work on mandamus lawsuits involving immigration delays, especially when valid visa holders (usually H1-B) travel overseas and experience indefinite delays when trying to return to the US (euphemistically referred to as “administrative processing”). This often results in job loss, family separation, and the need for unplanned arrangements to survive life abroad. The hardship stems from a dysfunctional bureaucracy, and it is truly disheartening. Thankfully, we have been successful in resolving these bottlenecks and facilitating the return of affected individuals to the US. However, the costs and inconveniences incurred beforehand are significant and awful. I can deeply empathize with the author of this article and the situation she describes.
